History

The name Mitchelstown

In the 13 century, a Norman family named ‘de St. Michel’ founded ‘Villa Michel’ on a gently sloping hill in Brigown parish. They had a particular devotion to St Michael the Archangel, who is known in the Bible as the great protector of God’s people against the Devil. As a popular Saint among the Normans they dedicated their village to him. The earliest known use of ‘Villa Michel’ dates to 1286.  The name evolved over the centuries to Mitchelstown. We are very happy to have this connection with St Michael and for this reason we claim his protection in a special way.

The church at Mitchelstown used to be named Saint Fanahan's and was renamed in 1854 by Dean Morgan O'Brien to the Church of Our Lady Conceived Without Sin.

Saint Fanahan

The patron Saint of Mitchelstown Parish is Saint Fanahan. A warrior monk also known as Fionn Cu (White Hound) he founded a monastery in the townland of Brigown.  After Saint Fanahan died (c.660) a place of pilgrimage was established at Saint Fanahan’s Well, near Brigown Church.

The well still exists and is maintained to this day serving as a place for prayer and reflection.
